Product Overview.............................................
- Many clients take the opportunity afforded by an ERP implementation to perform analysis of their business and processes. Other clients of ours might use Process Engineering as a standalone service for fine tuning processes and defining the optimal information required to support those processes.
- However, this type of analysis is often overlooked, the main reasons being time and money. Neglecting this opportunity can prove much more costly and time consuming in the long run.
- In the case of a software implementation, a team is usually assembled and the organization prepared for the team members absence. This is a good time to bite the bullet and perform the process analysis as the project has momentum and guidance from senior executives.
- Soft Systems Methodology
- Developed by Professors Peter Checkland and Brian Wilson at the World
renowned Systems department at the University of Lancaster UK.
- This methodology addresses the core values, principles and objectives of a company and helps to determine the operational tasks that are required to fulfill those goals. Such analysis can provoke scrutiny of company activities and even question whether a firm in the right business!
- More often though, the analysis will provide a conceptual framework, detailing the key activities, their integration and the information flow between them.
- Many large international firms have used the methodology, including British Telecom, Shell and British Airways.
- The Principal Consultant at Sheffield Consulting was tutored by Professors
Checkland and Wilson during a Masters degree in Information Management at the University of Lancaster.
- infoPro®
- Once the conceptual model is created, analysis is performed to determine the information required to support the model activities.
- This essential step, defines what information is required, both long and short term, to meet the needs of the company.
- The analysis also includes the definition of measures of performance for each activity. These measures are important in establishing how well, or badly, corporate activities are being performed.
- The final step in the infoPro® methodology, is the comparison between the
information requirement, defined above, and current or future information
provision. This comparison, or Gap Analysis, can help a client compare the information requirement to potential systems such as JDE®, SAP®, PeopleSoft® etc. and help in the software purchasing decision.
